On this Day in Georgia Sports History…..

May 23, 2017:

On this day in 1907, the Atlanta Crackers minor league baseball team played their first game at Ponce de Leon Ballpark in front of 8,246 fans. The new wooden park, built on the site of a drained lake in northeast Atlanta, cost $60,000 to construct and was owned by the Georgia Railway and Electric Company. After a fire destroyed the ballpark in 1923, a new ballpark made of steel and concrete took its place; the Crackers continued to call Ponce de Leon Ballpark their home through 1965.
